Grand Harbor, from afternoon into night — recorded in the game

The story

Thirteen years ago, the lights went out.

Once, the Lumen Network tied every island together. At its source stood the Everlight, and while that burned nobody ever lost their way home — however dark the sea got.

Then came The Sundering. The beacons went out, the islands drifted apart, and the sea roads disappeared into the dark.

You are a Lamplighter. You start with nothing but a flame, on an island barely still on the map. From there you sail on, beacon to beacon, until the light runs all the way round again. But the dark did not stay empty.

What you'll do

A world that answers when you light it

Everything here is in the game today, recorded as it plays.

A lamplighter beside a lantern he has just lit on the quay of Grand Harbor at night.

The core of it

Light every lantern by hand

Nobody lights the lamps for you. Walk up to a dead lantern, strike a flame, and the circle of light it throws is part of the island that is yours again. Every beacon you bring back makes the Old Lighthouse reach further — there is no percentage anywhere in the game.

A street in Morrow at dusk: lanterns burning, warm windows, a resident outside his door.

Bring it back

Restore a street, and people come home

Find a broom and sweep out thirteen years of dust. Hang the shutters back straight. Light the lamp by the door, and the house is yours. Do it to enough houses and the family that left moves back in: the baker opens the bakery, the schoolteacher stands in front of a class.

The ground floor of a player's house, furnished with a fireplace, sofa, dining table and bookcase.

Somewhere to live

Make a house your own

Rent a room above the inn, buy a house on the harbour, or restore a derelict one. Then furnish it: sixty-three pieces of furniture, walls you place yourself, floors, wallpaper and stairs. Leave the door open for everyone, only for friends, or keep it your quiet corner.

Blackwick at night: boarded-up houses, a few relit lanterns, and a Candlesnuffer on the square.

And the dark pushes back

Some places keep the dark on purpose

Past the last lamp the islands have gone feral: drowned marshes, ash plains, wisps that lead you off the path. In Blackwick, light a lantern and a Candlesnuffer walks over to put its bell over the flame. Some lanterns there you will light more than once.

“There is no progress bar in Lumenwick. There is a lighthouse.”

The Old Lighthouse on the harbour mole starts as one small, flickering light. Every beacon you bring back makes it reach further, until it throws a full beam out into the night.

The islands

The chain of beacons

Six places, each with its own weather, its own ground underfoot and its own reason to be dark.

The tiny island of Kleinlicht at dusk: one house, one shed, one jetty and one beacon.

where it starts

Kleinlicht

The smallest light that ever hung on the Lumen Network — and the first one you light.

The roofs and lanes of Haven City at dusk, seen from above the quay.

the harbour you keep coming back to

Haven City

Grand Harbor still has its lights on: a market till dark, an inn with rooms upstairs, a cathedral, an arena.

The half-drowned village of Willowbrook, with lanterns over dark water.

chapter one · absence

Willow Cove

The village is not destroyed. It emptied out. Old Bramwell still keeps the kettle warm.

The cinder fields of Ember Reach, cracked with glowing lava.

chapter two · work that stopped

Ember Reach

Everything stopped mid-sentence. On a workbench lies a letter that breaks off halfway through a line.

Drowned houses and wisps on the causeways of the Mistfall Isles at night.

chapter three · depth of time

Mistfall Isles

The Tidekeeper answers most questions with “I don't know”. The wisps are not there to help you.

The warm shallows and stalls of Sunspire Atoll in the afternoon sun.

and one place with nothing in it

Sunspire Atoll

No beacon, no boss, no chapter. Warm shallows, a market on the sand, and a long way to swim.

Haven City

For young and old

Safe by design, not by promise

Children play here too, so safety is built into how the game works.

Friends-only chat

New accounts can only chat with friends, and a friend is someone you both accepted. Chat can also be switched off completely.

Bottles, not messages

The only way to reach a stranger is a message in a bottle: one of thirty fixed sentences. Nobody can type their own words into it.

A person reads every report

Every player has Block and Report on their card. Blocking is yours alone; a report goes to a moderator, and a person reads it.

Nothing to buy

No adverts, no loot boxes, nothing to buy with real money. We never ask for your email address, your age or where you live.

Questions

The practical bit

In development, and already a world you can walk around in. Today that means:

  • Seven places to walk: Kleinlicht, Haven City, Willow Cove, Ember Reach, the Mistfall Isles, Sunspire Atoll and Dawnhold
  • Beacons to relight — and the Old Lighthouse that reaches further with every one
  • A room above the inn, a house to buy, or a derelict one to bring back
  • Furniture, walls, floors, wallpaper and stairs you place yourself
  • Other people: chat, friends, trading, day work from the guild board
  • Fishing, the arena, a companion that follows you, and a face of your own
  • Day and night, four seasons, and weather that changes what your lamps are worth
What is it?

A cosy isometric world you play in the browser. Walk, talk, trade, fish, fight when you have to, and furnish a room of your own.

What does it cost?

Nothing to try. There is no launcher, no installer and no download — you open a page and you are standing in it.

Is it finished?

No, and it says so. Seven places are walkable, the beacons work, the lighthouse answers and you can live in a house of your own. The rest arrives without announcement.

Who makes it?

One person, in the Netherlands, in the evenings. That is also why it is taking a while.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on your phone as well as on a computer: tap to walk, pinch to zoom, press and hold somebody for their card. Holding the phone sideways plays best.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Everybody who is online shares the same world. Add each other with your friend codes (press V), then talk, trade, fish side by side or visit each other's houses.

Is it safe for children?

Children play here, so it is built for that. New accounts start with chat set to friends only, and it can be turned off completely. Every player has Block and Report on their card, and a person reads every report. There are no ads and nothing to buy with real money.

Is it in Dutch?

Yes — the whole game is in English and in Dutch. You pick the language on the first screen and can change it later in the menu.

Come and light one.

Lumenwick runs straight in your browser. You click, and you are standing on the quay.
